Farm Happenings
Spring is in the air! With the recent warm weather we let the flock that lambed in December and January (pictured above) out of the barn with their lambs. They still have barn access and are in a large lot, not out on pasture, because they tend to ruin wet pastures and don’t allow the grass to grow if we turn them out too early. For the sheep remaining in the barn, we are eagerly waiting for them to start lambing any day now!
As some of you know, we run two flocks as lambing 400 all at once would be too much for us. In fact, 200 is still a lot for us to manage at once. So this year we’re going to try splitting our girls into four flocks of 100 or so each. That means lambing six times per year, since we’re on an accelerated schedule and each flock can lamb twice every other year. Basically, that means we’ll be lambing every other month! However, we’re going to try shorter breeding periods (one cycle instead of two) and therefore shorter lambing periods. For those of you interested I plan to post about this on our blog and on social media, so be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok!
Animal Sales
We are thankful for all of you who have purchased bottle babies, feeder lambs, bred ewes, starter flocks, breeding animals, or animals for custom processing from us over the years. Currently we are selling three starter flocks and are accepting offers until March 9, email us for an information packet and put “Starter Flock” in the subject line.
This year we are already sold out of lambs for feeders from the group that we’ll be weaning soon. We sell out of bottle babies quickly, anytime we have some. And, won’t have any animals for custom processing or whole lambs (that we process for you) until fall.
So, this means we need to start waiting lists and will manage advanced orders. You’ll need to let us know well in advance what you’re wanting to buy and when. Please note, it is very difficult for us to manage the frequent messages we receive over Voice Mail, Text, Facebook, or Instagram. Instead, we’re asking folks to send us an email to mistylanefarms@gmail.com and put what you’re looking for in the subject line and in the message body let us know the quantity, any additional details, and what time of year you want to pick up or have your order delivered.
Here are some examples of what we mean:
- Subject Line: Bottle Babies – Message: We would like 3-4 bottle babies when you lamb again in the winter months.
- Subject Line: Feeder Lambs – Message: We would like 40 feeder lambs in March or April 2025 and need them delivered.
- Subject Line: Lambs for Custom Processing – Message: I would like 10 Lambs for custom processing, for pick up in March 2025. They need to be at least six months old, ram lambs.
- Subject Line: Bred Ewes – Message: I’m interested in 10 bred ewes for purchase in October 2024.
- Subject Line: Whole Processed Lamb – Message: We would like two lambs processed, weighing at or over 110 pounds. We would like the meat delivered in November – December 2024.
- Subject Line: Frozen Lamb Cuts – Message: We would like 10 packages of lamb loins (4 per package) for delivery on June 10, 2024.
We hope to accommodate any requests, but supplies are limited and in some cases requests require quite a bit of advanced planning. Thankfully, we’re not having any problems selling our animals or meat! Please visit this page for general information about pricing and what animals are in stock.
